Most Runs in Last 5 Overs in IPL: Top Records
The record for the Most Runs in Last 5 Overs in IPL belongs to RCB, who smashed hundred and twelve runs against the Gujarat Lions team back in 2016. Nobody has topped it since. The closest any team has come is 97 runs. RCB scored that total against CSK in 2026, while DC did the same against Gujarat Titans in 2024.
Fans on the Khelosports Platform always seem to have one question about T20 cricket: how much damage can a team do once the 16th over starts? Turns out, quite a lot. Overs 16 to 20 are where totals of 180 turn into 230, and a few teams have gone absolutely wild in that window. Here’s a look at the biggest bursts, the batters behind them, and why death overs matter so much.
Top Team Records for the Last 5 Overs
| Rank | Runs (Overs 16 to 20) | Batting Team | Opponent | Venue | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 112 | Royal Challengers Bengaluru | Gujarat Lions | Bengaluru | 2016 |
| 2 | 97 | Royal Challengers Bengaluru | Chennai Super Kings | Bengaluru | 2026 |
| 2 | 97 | Delhi Capitals | Gujarat Titans | Delhi | 2024 |
Quick thing you’ll notice: Bengaluru shows up twice. Anyone who’s sat in the stands there will tell you the boundaries feel tiny. Bowlers hate the place, and big hitters love it.
RCB’s 112 vs Gujarat Lions (2016)
This one still feels a bit unreal. On May 14, 2016, de Villiers joined Kohli early in the innings. and simply didn’t stop. Kohli got his 109 from 55 deliveries. De Villiers was even quicker, 129 not out from 52, and between them they put on 229.
By the 16th over, RCB were already in a strong spot. Then the pair cut loose and added 112 in the last five overs alone, taking RCB to 248 for 3. Ten years on, no other IPL side has managed even 100 in that stretch. There were no signs of Gujarat Lions being even near in the run chase, and they were defeated by a huge margin of 144 runs.
It is important to note that 200 runs was something very significant for IPL matches, and 248 runs seemed to be ridiculous.
That’s part of why fans still bring this innings up whenever a big death-over burst happens.
RCB’s 97 Against CSK (2026)
Ten years later, RCB nearly did it again. Against CSK at home in April 2026, they sat close to 150 after 15 overs. Then Tim David and Rajat Patidar took over.
David made 70 runs not out in just 25 balls, hitting eight sixes. RCB scored 97 runs in the last five overs, finishing with 250 for three. David made 68 runs in the last four overs, which was the highest any batsman had scored in that span of an IPL innings. CSK were all out for 207, losing by 43 runs to RCB.
DC’s 97 Against GT (2024)
Delhi’s burst came in 2024, mostly off the bat of Rishabh Pant. He finished on 88 not out and took 31 runs off Mohit Sharma’s final over. Axar Patel chipped in with a quick fifty earlier on, and Delhi reached 224 for 4. That total turned out to be just enough, as Delhi held on to win by 4 runs.
IPL Death Overs Batting Records Worth Knowing
The last-five-overs list is only one part of the story. A few other IPL death overs batting records show how much the final stretch has changed over the years.
Looking at 19th and 20th overs alone. In 2025, RCB scored 54 runs from these 12 deliveries in their match against CSK, and out of which Romario Shepherd made 52 of them. Funnily enough, the old mark of 53 came from Delhi’s 2024 innings against GT, the same match mentioned above.
Also, RCB has more 75-plus bursts in the death overs than any other team. CSK and MI aren’t far off, which makes sense given how many big hitters both sides have had over the years.
The Best Finishers in IPL History
You don’t get these kinds of totals without someone who keeps their head when 15 an over is needed. A handful of the best finishers in IPL history made a name for themselves almost entirely in this phase.
MS Dhoni
Dhoni made the last over his own. He’d often take the chase deep, then clear the ropes off the final few balls. CSK fans have seen him finish more tight chases than they could count.
AB de Villiers
De Villiers scored all around the ground, including behind the keeper. Because of this, bowlers had no safe line to aim at in the final overs. His part in the 112-run record says plenty.
Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell
Pollard gave Mumbai Indians raw power at the end for over a decade. Russell did the same for KKR, often walking in late and turning 170 into 210 in a few overs.
Tim David
David is the newest name on this list. His 2026 knock against CSK shows how dangerous he is from overs 16 to 20.
Why the Last 5 Overs Matter So Much
Simply put, this is where T20 matches swing. Bowlers have no fielding restrictions to hide behind, and batters with wickets in hand swing at almost everything. A team adding 60 in the last five overs usually posts a decent total.
A team adding 90-plus usually puts the match out of reach. That’s why the Most Runs in Last 5 Overs in IPL list keeps getting attention every season, and why the 112-run mark from 2016 has held up for a decade. For more IPL records, stats and match insights, keep checking Khelosports.
