Bangladesh Seeks T20 World Cup Venue Change - Here’s What BCB Said

Bangladesh Seeks T20 World Cup Venue Change - Here’s What BCB Said

The T20 World Cup 2026 is coming closer, and most teams are already preparing for it. In the middle of this, a small issue has come up involving Bangladesh’s matches. The  Bangladesh Cricket Board has written to the ICC, saying they are not very comfortable playing matches in India. The board asked to shift the matches to another place.

This situation picked up momentum after  Mustafizur Rahman  was released from the  KKR squad, which led to fresh concerns inside the board.

The Bangladesh team had to play 4 group stage matches across different cities in India. However, after this appeal, the matches of the team are likely to be shifted to Sri Lanka, just like Pakistan.

The move has opened up a layered debate involving security assurances, tournament logistics, politics around sport, and how world cricket responds when a team expresses discomfort about a host environment.

Reason Behind the Request

The tipping point came after Mustafizur Rahman’s removal from the IPL, a development that immediately triggered alarm within BCB circles.

Soon after, the BCB held an emergency meeting and began drafting a formal communication to the ICC. The board highlighted that the concern extended beyond the playing XI:

The safety net needs to include:

  1. 1. Travelling team officials
  2. 2. Journalists and crew
  3. 3. Sponsors and support staff
  4. 4. Fans are expected to follow the team

A senior government adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports reiterated the same concern. They noticed that if a contracted Bangladeshi cricketer faced participation restrictions or risk signals, the national team could not reasonably expect to feel secure.

BCB’s Position on Playing in India

The Bangladesh Cricket Board said that, “after reviewing the current situation and acting on government advice, the Board has decided that the Bangladesh National Team will not travel to India under the present conditions.” The decision, it added, is based on concerns about the safety of the entire traveling contingent.

The board further stated that “the BCB has formally requested the ICC to relocate all of Bangladesh’s matches to a venue outside india.”

A senior official said, “If BCCI cannot ensure the security of one player, how can they give full protection to the whole team?  We cannot play in India; we can play in Sri Lanka.”

What Options Are Being Considered?

Changing venues this close to a global tournament is far from simple. Hotel blocks, broadcast schedules, security deployments, and venue rotations are already mapped out weeks in advance. According to different administrators, shifting may pose a major logistical challenge.

Currently, ICC has received the request, which is under review. If the relocation is approved, then matches may shift to Sri Lanka. Here are the top possible options available:

Possible Scenarios Ahead

Scenario 1: Matches stay in India

  • Extra security layers are added
  • Joint ICC-BCB reviews continue through the tournament

Scenario 2: Matches move to Sri Lanka

  • Bangladesh follows the Pakistan model

  • Minor schedule reshuffles, but same group alignment

Scenario 3: Hybrid arrangement

  • Some matches stay in India

  • High-risk fixtures move to a neutral venue

All three of these scenarios are currently open. Sri Lanka has a high chance of being the host for Bangladesh matches.

Such contingency planning reflects how hosting responsibilities and on-field dominance often go hand in hand. India’s ability to adapt under varying conditions has been evident in recent results, including their historic 5–0 home series sweep against Sri Lanka, which underlined the team’s control, depth, and consistency in home conditions.

If matches are shifted, the most likely replacement venues would be in Sri Lanka.

The switch would also bring subtle cricketing changes. It will lead to slower tracks at times, different crowd dynamics, and tactical variations that teams must account for. But for Bangladesh, the trade-off may be acceptable if it means certainty and peace of mind.

Future India-Bangladesh Series

The venue issue is making the upcoming India-Bangladesh cricket plans kind of uncertain.
Right now, Bangladesh doesn’t really want to play in India. The main reason is security worries.

Inside the board, experts even stated that the September tour might get canceled. Furthermore, something similar already happened earlier. Last year, India canceled a series with Bangladesh too, again pointing to security reasons.

So now the whole topic of tours and hosting feels a bit sensitive. For now, both boards haven’t clearly said anything official about the long-term future of the series.

What Can Happen Next?

  1. 1. Matches at a neutral venue, if both sides still want to play.

  2. 2. Shift matches to a later time in the calendar.

  3. 3. Cancel the upcoming series until the issue is resolved.

Until any final update comes, the cricket relation is kind of wait-and-watch, more about safety… not really about cricket issues.

Final Words

Bangladesh’s asking for a venue change before the tournament feels sudden. With the T20 World Cup coming closer, this has added some uncertainty around it. It also brings back the talk about safety and responsibility in global sports.

Whatever decision comes, whether the ICC keeps things the same or shifts the venue, it will influence how boards think about risk and logistics next time. For now, Bangladesh waits. And honestly, the cricket world waits too.
